Marketing and advertising executive turned radio personality, John is best known for his pioneering work in helping to create and manage Subaru of America’s award-winning 15-year advertising effort to the LGBT community, at a time when it was considered very risky for a business to speak to gay and lesbian consumers. He has worked with Absolut, John Hancock, Diet Pepsi, Chase Manhattan Bank and other blue chip brands through his partnership at two ad agencies that specialized in the LGBT consumer. Regularly cited in stories by both the gay and mainstream press, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Advertising Age and BrandWeek, among others, John also has appeared as a featured speaker and panelist for numerous niche marketing events and conferences.

Creating the visual language of inclusion: Subaru and the LGBT consumer, a 15-year success story

Adapting general market advertising materials for the LGBT consumer can pose a number of problems for a brand. But when a company chooses to produce custom materials for this segment, the challenges can be surprisingly more difficult. Over a 15 year period, Subaru of America fielded unique and memorable campaigns that not only were true to the brand, but also spoke authentically and smartly to the LGBT audience. This talk looks at the visual evolution of those campaigns.
